Let's just say right now that I'm not a winter person -- really not. Cold and dark does not equal fun in my book. One thing that I always crave during winter is being outside. I enjoy the warm sun, not having to have 14 layers on, and things being green. I love the smell of things growing, the look when the yard is shaped up and the taste of fresh herbs.
But with time flying by at the speed of light, the yard has gotten a little out of hand. At least until this past weekend...
This is the back flower bed which is getting a little revamp as far as design. 
I was going to put my rose back here but I decided that there just is not enough sun for a rose to do its best. So I enlarged it -- just a little and have decided to make it a bed of color and cut flowers.

a few hours, and 1 very dirty and sweaty Lizzard, this was the cleaned up bed. 
It's still a work in progress -- i.e. the ferns will be moved to what will become the shade garden on the side of the house. So far, I've got dianthus, a Lenten Rose, Asters, columbine, Coreopsis, Lambs ear, stokesia and an azalea. If anyone has any ideas as to pretty flowers/plants that are preferably perennials, I'm open for suggestions!

One of my faves is Blue Delphiniums. There are several different varieties and they like sun.
We've planted some "foxglove beardtongue" (Penstemon Digitalis) and are pretty happy with it so far. The stems are purple, and the leaves can be purplish, so they're really the most striking feature. The flowers are neat, too, though. It's a perennial that blooms for most of the summer, and it's fairly tall. Here's a photo of what they look like when they fill in:
